Wereldwijd volop aandacht voor weeshuistoerisme

Ook de maand april was er wereldwijd veel aandacht voor weeshuistoerisme.

Op de Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM)  in London, afgelopen week, zijn verschillende evenementen rondom weeshuistoerisme georganiseerd. Zo belichtte de Australische senator  Linda Reynolds (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/17/orphanage-tourism-a-scam-fostered-by-australians-liberal-senator-says) het probleem met weeshuistoerisme, en noemde het “the perfect 21st century scam”.

Directeur van Lumos,  Georgette Mulheir, (https://www.wearelumos.org/news-and-media/2018/04/16/bogus-orphan-trade-fuelled-voluntourism/) sprak ook op op een CJOGM nevenevenement: “Parents are told that their child will have a better life and access to education in the so-called ‘orphanage’. But the reality is these children are not orphans and many are held in terrible conditions, exposed to all forms of abuse.These children are essentially used as bait to persuade well- meaning tourists to give their time, commitment and money.”
