Nieuws uit Nepal

Wellicht heb je het vele nieuws over kwetsbare kinderen na de aarbeving in Nepal op TV, in de kranten of op sociale media al voorbij zien komen.

Een land dat voor de aardbeving ook al te maken had met kinderhandel; kinderen uit arme gezinnen en afgelegen gebieden die onder valse voorwendselen - belofte op een beter leven/onderwijs in de stad - terecht kwamen in kinderhuizen om zo de dollars van toeristen en vrijwilligers binnen te halen. Nu, in de nasleep van de aardbeving, wordt hier extra voor gewaarschuwd. Zie bijvoorbeeld het bericht van Martin Punaks, directeur van Next Generation Nepal:

”So far the evidence suggests that there are not that many orphans or unaccompanied children as a result of the earthquake. In other words, children are still living relatively safely with their families. However the risks to these children are still huge because based on history we believe that traffickers will target these vulnerable earthquake affected families and persuade them to ‘give up’ their children in the interests of them having a ‘better life’ in children’s homes in Kathmandu. This may become more prevalent as the monsoon approaches and living conditions worsen further for villagers. Whilst the Government has approved, and so far largely enforced, excellent policies to stop this happening (a ban on new children’s homes being registered, a ban on children being transported to Kathmandu), there is still not enough being done in the villages themselves to keep families together. So NGN is now working on establishing a project to provide a safe play space for children in at-risk villages so we can build the trust of the local community and start to raise their awareness of trafficking. Thankfully we have seen very little evidence so far of people trying to profit from child victims of the earthquake, but we must remain vigilant and do more in the villages to prevent this problem developing over the coming months.”
